              Track Spike Rentals

St Charles has a Running Spike Rental Program.  This program, created by Kevin Leigh,
makes track spikes available to any track runner (except Intramurals who are not permitted to
wear spikes) for a $10 per season fee.  This fee is then reinvested in the program to buy
additional pairs of shoes, the plastic boxes the shoes are kept in and also the metal spikes that
are in the bottom of the shoe.

While Running Spikes are not mandatory, they do provide better traction on the surface of the
track and it is recommended that they be worn in our CYO meets.  Track spikes are to be worn
only in the meets, not for the practices.  These shoes do not provide adequate support and
cushioning for use in regular practices.  Athletes may purchase their own shoes if they desire or
they may rent from this program.

This year, we will be sizing those interested in renting spikes during the last week of
March.  If paying by check, please make check payable to: Kevin Leigh.
The season begins with indoor practices held at St Charles.  These indoor practices are actually
a combination of
indoor and outdoor conditioning.  Athletes should come dressed for both
indoor and outdoor running -
removable layers that can be taken off or added as needed.
Please have any clothing the athlete may remove
labeled with his/her name.  If you don't want to
actually write in the garment, a piece of tape (blue to the coaches when they are left with a pile of
garments that the athletes have removed as they warmed up from their workouts.

Outdoor Practices will be held at the Parma Senior High School Track starting the end of
March from 6:00 - 7:15 pm.  The track is located behind Parma Senior High School 6285 W 54th
St.  Track entrance is off Longwood Ave.  Practices will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday this year.

In addition to
clothing appropriate for the weather, the athletes should bring a water bottle
to these outdoor practices.

Practices are held
rain or shine with the exception of thunderstorms.  In the instances of
poor weather, shortened practices may be held.  So parents, please check with the coaches
before leaving your child at practice in poor weather.

Parents are welcome to either drop their child at practice and return to pick them up or to stay at
practice.  There are bleachers inside the track that the parents may sit on or many will stay in
their cars and do paperwork (or nap).  Other parents will utilize this time as exercise time for
themselves and other family members.  Since our team is rather large and on Mondays and
Wednesdays we share the track with the Intramural Team, it is recommended  that parents use
the fitness trail in Veteran's Memorial Park for their exercise time.  There is a cut-through to the
trail at the south end of the track.  This fitness trail is a great one-mile loop through the park - a
combination of hills and flat sections on an asphalt trail.
